Langkawi 2006, 3-5 Dec Day 1

Finally, we were off to the beautiful island of Langkawi. If you just want to look at the pictures, click on the following album. Otherwise, read on.

The girls were, expectedly, very excited about the trip; especially Jolyn who had never been on an aeroplane.

When the aircraft finally arrived at the departure gate, we were slightly disappointed that it was such a small plane. I suppose not many people travel from Singapore to Langkawi each day.

I had the “good fortune” of sitting next to the wings of the aircraft. It was not a very spectacular view, but had the engines caught fire, I would be the first to know.

Nicole couldn’t wait for the plane to land and for the party to begin.

About one and half hours after we took off, the plane descended. We began to see land rushing up towards us.

Touch down! The Langkawi International Airport was a far cry from our Changi Airport, but it did had a rustic charm around it. We met a friendly Caucasian guy, who volunteered to take a picture of our entire family. We thanked him profusely. I wondered if my fellow Asians would have made a similar offer.

When we retrieved our lugguage, we discovered that the handle of our suitcase was damaged. We had to make a detour to the baggage office to file a report.

We finally cleared the customs and boarded a van towards our hotel. Our driver, Michael, was very chatty. After travelling with him for about 30 minutes, we learnt a lot about the history of Langkawi. Nicole and Jolyn were also hyped up because it was their maiden trip on board of a van.

During the trip to our hotel, I noticed that, although Langkawi is a popular tourist destination, most of the island remained undeveloped.

We arrived at our hotel room just in time to witness the Langkawi sunset.

Being full blooded Singaporean, we decided to do some shopping before retiring for the the day. Although Langkawi is a duty free haven, the only things which were really cheap there were liquor and cigarettes.

After some shopping and dinner, we returned to the hotel for a well deserved hot water bath and a good night’s rest.

Our hotel room was a picture of luxury.

That’s all for day one.
